Monitoring Arctic & Antarctic sea ice using Envisat ASAR Global Monitoring Mode mosaics

The high temporal coverage provided by Envisat ASAR Global Monitoring mode data makes this an ideal data source for monitoring sea ice in the Arctic.

It is important to understand the processes governing ice behaviour in this region, both for operational applications, such as ship routing, and for assessing global climate change.

ASAR Global Monitoring images provide frequent, large-scale, day and night coverage at a sufficient resolution to allow ice motion to be monitored and for opening in the ice to be detected.

The images shown below are mosaics formed from ASAR Global Monitoring mode data. eOsphere is generating these mosaics on a daily basis as part of ESA's GMES PolarView project to support the commercial and scientific communities active in the Arctic region.

The browse images shown below have a pixel size of 10 km x 10 km.
