Ice Monitoring for Offshore Operations

eOsphere can provide a complete offshore ice information service; including data planning and acquisition from satellites and ancillary sources, the provision of analysis systems (software and hardware) to support offshore environmental monitoring, sea-ice analysis and ice forecasting, quality control and management and coordination.

Vexcel UK, now eOsphere, has specialised in sea ice monitoring since it was established in 2001. eOsphere has carried out historical studies of sea ice conditions to provide evidence in cases of litigation and to provide the basis for seasonal outlooks of ice conditions, where the past is assumed to provide a guide to the future.

eOsphere provide daily near real time maps of hemispheric ice conditions to the US National Ice Center and the Norwegian Meteorological Office. These products have been delivered since 2004 and are derived from the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) ENVISAT data, which has been used in support of their ice charting operations, and has been used to derive information on icebergs and leads.

Polar View

eOsphere is a part of the PolarView Team supported by the European Space Agency. Polar View offers integrated monitoring and forecasting services in the Polar Regions using satellite earth observation data to support improved decision-making, planning and adaptation to climate change. Services take the form of enhanced sea ice information (charts and forecasts), snow maps and glacier and iceberg monitoring data. Key aims are to support safe and cost-effective marine operations, improved water management, balanced and sustainable economic development, and environmental monitoring.

Arctic Ice Movie: Moving images can reveal valuable information for understanding ice dynamics, including indentifying high and low pressure ice regions.

The eOsphere Arctic Ice Movie Product: A moving ice image covering a period of one month. This product is updated once per week. Please contact Nick Walker for information about receiving a zoomed version of this product tailored to your specific Area of Interest.

Antarctic Ice Shelf Images.

Near real time views of Antarctic Ice Shelves and Coastline. eOsphere mosaic products derived from Envisat ASAR Global Monitoring mode data provide regular images of Antarctic ice shelves and coastline. Produced as a part of the PolarView programme.
